Fun information about our Korora Penguins

A penguin swims gracefully in clear blue water, its black and white feathers glistening under the sunlight.

🐧 1. The World’s Smallest Penguin

Little Blue Penguins are the tiniest penguins on the planet, standing just 30 cm tall and weighing around 1 kg — about the size of a rugby ball!

🌊 2. Stylish Night Owls

Unlike many penguin species, kororā prefer to come ashore after dark, using the cover of night to waddle safely up the beach to their burrows.

💙 3. Blue Feathers, Not Black

Their name isn’t a trick — their feathers really are a beautiful indigo-blue! This helps camouflage them from predators both above and below the water.

🐟 4. Ocean Adventurers

These little penguins can dive for up to 2 minutes at a time and swim as fast as 6 km per hour — that’s quicker than most humans can run!

🏡 5. Ambassadors with a Mission

Our Ambassador Penguins are exceptional individuals who cannot return to the wild. Still, they play a vital role in helping visitors learn about penguin conservation and the fragile marine ecosystem of New Zealand’s West Coast.
